Giant Steps

Nose: Lovely rustic charry notes, cinnamon, cloves, dark chocolate and ginger. Palate: Poached cherry, olive, cinnamon, treacle. Orange peel and vanilla bean. Pretty and supple. Food: Grilled veal cutlets, suckling pig with five spice.

James Halliday

From the estate vineyard; with seven clones, 10% whole bunches, remainder destemmed, not crushed, five day cold soak 12-day ferment with minimal plunging; 24% new French oak, 11 months in oak. A highly fragrant bouquet with cherry and wild strawberry fruit that carries through to the silky palate. Very attractive wine.

Score: 96. November 2011.

World Wine

A terrific quartet of 2010 Yarra Pinot Noir from individual vineyards – Sexton, Tarraford, Applejack and Gladysdale. If you wanted to be extravagant, or hold a little tasting with friends, then I’d recommend buying the set and enjoying the differences. And in our new segment, Wine Show Watch, I can report that this took a trophy at 2011 Royal Queensland and only a bronze at the 2011 Yarra Valley Show. A pretty wine, so much so that you almost want to cuddle it. Sweet red fruit and choc-vanilla, spice and a touch of smoky undergrowth. It’s soft and full with squishy red cherry, balanced non-invasive acidity and supple fine grained tannin that spreads out on the finish. Has complexity and it drinks beautifully. An easy style to fall in love with. Almost rated it a little higher.

Score: 94. September 2011.

Wine Advocate

A single vineyard wine from the Sexton vineyard planted in 1997, the 2010 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir underwent a wild fermentation in small open top fermenters using 10% whole bunches and was matured 11 months in new (30%) and older French oak barriques. Medium ruby-purple colored, it offers a moderate intensity of ripe red cherry and pomegranate aromas with hints of cedar, lavender and cinnamon stick. Light to medium bodied, it gives a good amount of pure red berry flavors supported by crisp acid and a low level of fine-grained tannins. The finish is long with a little cinnamon toast coming though the berry vibrancy. Drink it now to 2015+.

Score: 91+. —Lisa Perrotti-Brown, June 2011.
