You may remember we offered the 2008 version of this Bourgogne Rouge last year and it sold like crazy. On vintage reputation alone the 2009 should sell at least as fast so if you are interested – buy now. Thankfully we have managed to order more this time around though it will sell out soon.
I’m sure most of our customers will have already heard the hype regarding the 2009 Burgundies (and the wines across Europe in general). It really is quite a remarkable year that has produced wines that are both juicy and ripe and wildly seductive. This seductiveness is quite a contrast to the last truly great vintages of 1999 and 2005 where the reds were far more densely structured.
Having said this, the Bourgogne Rouge 2009 actually does have some structure thanks to the 50% whole bunches – quite unusual for a Burgundy at this price level.
This is the first Cote d’Or Burgundy that we have landed from this remarkable year. It’s made by Francois Labet, one of the region’s pioneers in natural viticulture and the largest vineyard holder in the Clos de Vougeot with Chateau de la Tour.
It’s not only brilliantly priced Bourgogne but we have it under Stelvin. We also have some of Labet’s 2008 Bourgogne Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes back in stock – a clean, zippy and bone dry Chardonnay and again an excellent value.
World Wine
We looked at this wine in France last year with Francois during a memorable day at Chateau de la Tour. Notwithstanding the company it had to keep - Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot - it was a very a fine Burgundy indeed, as a well known wine critic used to put it, punching well above its weight.
Itâs only medium bodied but with a chewy core and plenty of complex fruit. Thereâs also something quite traditional here: savoury rather than overtly sweet and with an inky depth that you get from wines that have had a good cold soak. The length is superb for a wine of this level. It will blossom over the coming weeks and months gaining texture and fruit sweetness.
For a Bourgogne at this price level it has a ridiculous pedigree. Itâs infused with Francois Labetâs kid-glove approach to viticulture and winemaking. The wine comes from organically managed vineyards with vines over 40 years of age (hence Vielles Vignes) in and around Chorey les Beaune. The fruit was hand harvested and then sorted (who ever heard of a Bourgogne level made from sorted fruit?). It was vinified at Chateau de La Tour so Labet had total control. The juice received a cold soak for a week with 50% whole bunches retained. Fermentation was in open topped fermenters (wild yeast only) before the wine was aged in barrels (10% new) for 12 months. It was bottled without filtration.
Quite a remarkable story for a Burgundy at this price point and the wine in the bottle backs it up.
Score: 95.

James Suckling
I rate wines using the 100-points scale. I have used this point system for close to 25 years. I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
